According to "about.com" the definition or the meaning of the word boutonniere is as follows:  "A flower (or a small grouping of flowers) attached to the left lapel of a jacket. Worn by men in the wedding party, including grooms, groomsmen, ushers, and the fathers of the bride and groom."

Fancy boutonniere

The word boutonniere traditionally comes from the French.  Alternatively they can also be called button holes.  Traditionally, the flower was placed in the button hole of the man's suit or tuxedo. However, these days, most boutonnieres are pinned directly to the man's lapel.

The traditional started initially to ward off bad smells, disease and evil spirits, however, lately it has become more of a fashion statement, with many different flowers to chose from, as well as styles and colours.

The big question still lies with choosing the correct flower or arrangement to suite the theme and look of the wedding, without overpowering the poor guy wearing it.

Some helpful tips and hints:

  1. A boutonniere can cost anything
from R10.00 up to R90.00 (which is the ultimate level, mostly for expensive orchards).
  2. Traditionally the groom's boutonniere should differ in colour, style and bloom from that of the rest of the bridal party.
  3. Don't choose "flimsy" flowers such as lisianthus as their stems are very soft and they might not hold.
  4. Don't chose flowers that are too big (such as large gerbera's) rather opt for something smaller and more delicate (it doesn't have to be girly).  You don't want your husband to be to look like chico the clown on your wedding day.
